Great idea to have a Cupcake Bar at your next Mitzvah or Wedding....It will surely create interaction for your guests allowing them to choose their cake, filling and even frosting. I love this idea instead of just having the cupcakes already done up. Who doesn't like to decorate cupcakes and then eat their creation? They even have a Sprinkle option for you to go wild with little bits of funfetti!

This one is for my daughter (who is 23) but LOVES sprinkles on anything or just right out of the container!

Cake Batter Rice Krispies Recipe

(From How Sweet Eats)

Ingredients:

3 Tbsp. butter

1 (10 oz.) bag of mini-marshmallows

1/4 cup yellow cake mix (the dry cake mix, not prepared into a batter!)

6 cups crispy rice cereal

1 (1.75 oz.) container of sprinkles

Method:
Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat and add marshmallows. Stir until they begin to melt, adding in (dry) cake mix one spoonful at a time so its combined. Stir in cereal so it is completely coated with marshmallow mixture. Sprinkle in half of the sprinkles and mix. Press into a baking dish (any size will do) and top with remaining sprinkles. Let sit for about 30 minutes before cutting. I find spraying a knife with nonstick spray helps to cut them.

Ali’s Tip:
I actually increased the cake batter to 1/3 cup for my recipe to give it a little extra cake batter kick (the 1/4 cup seemed just a little too subtle to me), but add as much in as you like!

***Note: Many readers have asked what to do with the remaining cake mix. If you would like to use it to whip up a batch of cake mix cookies, just measure out 6 oz. of the remaining cake mix, and combine it with 1/4 cup vegetable or canola oil, and 1 egg. Stir until mixed. Then form into cookie dough balls, and bake in a 350 degree oven for 10-12 minutes.

Last week we took part in a Bridal Experience at the Hotel Palomar in Chicago. It was hosted and run by the amazing Candace Polk of Glitz Event Design. The theme...Moroccan. We spent all week saying.."does this look Moroccan to you?" But in the end we pulled off a great tablescape for our "Sweethearts in Morocco".

I decided to paint and add the Mr. & Mrs. tiles (the morning of the event) to the chairs to feature the artwork designed for our table. These tiles can be a great keepsake for the bride and groom to remember the great day! What a busy day-

Looking forward to showing off some great photos from Bellissima Photography that really capture the whole evening. Sadly with all the event chaos and last minute painting project, we only had our iPhones to snap a few shots.

Some say its the latest "web-drug" addiction, others... a waste of time. BUT Pinterest is taking over lives and becoming a HUGE hit. It was brought to my attention that many people are pinning items on the web, why not have some of those items be "my images"? Now that's a great marketing idea! This past week I did a test to see if random people will "repin" my stationery items, and they DID!

Pinterest is a GREAT way for me as a designer to see what a Brides "likes" are for designing custom stationery, and they are not having to carry around tons of torn out samples either.

ISSE Chicago Recap

A week later I am still recapping our Experience from ISS Chicago at The Sax Hotel. I knew when I saw the line up I needed to make it to the event. With the awesome deal of adding a friend, I brought my daughter Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Danielle Ruggiero.

Monday evening was the Welcome Party, we got glammed up and headed to the city. Parking..."oh sure you can park right here in front and take your keys with you" "it will be $16.00 for however long"...not sure our car was going to be there when we returned....BUT it was! Thank God haha-
We met so many amazing people that night, just getting us primed for the next day. The Inspire-tinis were very good, I had one....not saying how many all the others had at our table. We had fun with all the photo-ops, Danielle's motto of Hello my name is..." always helps in these situations. She met her friends and I was able to meet some great ones as well. Staying til the end we headed home to get some rest- ha

Up early and we decided to take the train into the city this time...crazy taxi ride is always an experience in Chicago from Union Station. Arriving in one piece we found our name cards and picked up our fantastic Swag Bags....coffee in hand, we entered in for a GREAT day.

Learning all sorts of business building tips from great speakers like Laura Wrasman, Publisher of Wedding Guide Chicago, Stacie Francombe, head of the ISS Experience, Brit Tucker of Landlocked Brides, and Amy Allen Publisher of Chicago Social Bride.

Getting Published was the agenda, great tips from contacting Editors to understanding what they look for when accepting stories. Just a true transparency on all their parts...Thank you ladies!

Breaking for a fabulous lunch, we got a chance to interact with all the great, talented vendors. It was great to chat with people we hadn't yet met and share our passions for the businesses. At our table the amazing Tiffany Cook of Dream Design Wedding and Events and Platinum Events TV, she was so "real"...well all the highlight speakers were~! Thank you Tiffany for sharing your wedding story and laughs with all of us at lunch. After being stuffed to the gills we headed back into the Experience for the afternoon segment on Getting on TV.

The television panel consisted of Stacie, Tiffany and the super sweet, fun loving Diann Valentine who we had met the evening before sharing laughs and photo ops with. She tells it like it is, and we loved her for that. Danielle often carries a bit of her style swag...but you truly have to have confidence in this business. If you can't pump yourself up, who will? The panel shared the importance and how-to's of getting on a local segment as well as a national segment. I think for most this was one subject we all felt a bit uncomfortable about...speaking on a camera set. But they assured that even themselves get the butterflies, but you just move on and the idea of being on camera does become easier. Hmmm....me a "behind the scenes gal" we will need to work up to that.

Dessert time! WHOA....we needed a dinner plate for this part of the day. Sugar coma about to happen- Wonderful desserts were provided, huge strawberries and mini cupcakes to name just a few. Plus the much needed coffee to ward off the "no sleep and sugar coma" about to happen. Great job Desiree of Dejanae Events for all you did to keep us fed all day long~ and a successful conference!

Finishing up with one last session of Social Media by Stacie and then our Experience came to an end. But not without exchanging hugs to all... Twitter, FB and emails to keep in contact with all the great NEW vendor friends we met. "OUR NEW FRIENDS" as we call them.

I hope some of you will take advantage of this event if Stacie and her ISSE crew comes into your area. Even if you are not in the wedding industry the content is great for all small businesses trying to get ahead of the next.

Halloween Talents...

This inspiration for Halloween I am featuring a few others than myself. My niece Lauren Massa, lives in the Southern Calf. area and is a talented baker. I love to see all her creations come up on FB photos. If we only lived closer, I could promote her a bit more in the wedding business here in Chicago. Her haunted house cake is great for a spooky party among friends, adding a decorative item to the tablescape but also edible!

Next up is someone I have featured before...my daughter Danielle Ruggiero. This time of year you can see her true passion come out, when she is digging into her FX bag of makeup and stirring up homemade blood. Yes we do have homemade blood in our refrigerator at this moment- She gets calls from all sorts of friends and family looking for tips and a body slash or two. Even though she was a princess, a fairy and even a lady bug in her younger days...zombies seem to be where she is at these days.

Invitations do set the mood for your event...the smallest of parties can have custom invitations. Why not go all out sending your guest an invitations dripping in all the spookiest gore, letting them know your party is going to be "over the top"!

Good 'ol Country-Time feel...

This inspiration board was a fun, personal and a TRUE laid back feel. When I design promo samples I usually grab names, places and dates of people that I know, so you never know who some might marry and where!

This was a fun one to do, a young couple from church just got engaged and although we don't live on a farm, Wadsworth is considered the "Village of Country Living". It is not uncommon to see the local church in town, with a tractor and trailer in front of the little chapel, instead of a limo.

When designing Custom Stationery you don't have to always think formal flowers and metallic, this suite uses a "casual" feel with switching up the fonts and and creating a Daisy Up monogram to fit the couples character.

Here is some "Bakery Twine" again, it also gives that fun touch to your event. Try tying some around a simple brown lunch bag with a Daisy Up tag for a to-go bag that your guest can take home with them with a late night "sweet treat".

Spanish Twist on an Invitation

I have been putting some different types of invitation samples together for promo and print. This is a booklet format with a hand painted letter monogram on shimmer cardstock, it shows the detail to the invitation right off the bat! Using a similar tile idea from the past, I added the monogram in the tile as well. This invitation suite was designed for the Spanish culture using the native language as the invitation context. If you had Spanish and English guests attending you could create both versions of copy.

This suite also features the band strap on the inside that holds all the attachment cards in place, making is easy for the guests to slip the Reception Card in their pocket or hand bag for keeping important times and address in an easy to reach place. This is a double-sided card using the tile on the front and the details and information on the reverse side.

What to-do to keep the little ones occupied...? We have created a theme oriented coloring page and crayons for the Bride and Groom to hand out. This can be tailored to your theme, slogans, and even age group.

Murder Mystery Time

Last week I had the chance to work with my daughter Danielle Ruggiero on a WGN-TV segement that Simply Perfect by Melissa hosted, Murder Mystery Halloween. It was fun to think outside of the (wedding) box for a bit. I designed invitation packages for both themes that Melissa came up with...lots of blood! Danielle was asked to altar a body that had "checked into the hospital, that NEVER checked out", it is amazing to watch her work and use her talents in FX Makeup that she gained while attending MUD in Burbank, California.

The event was for North Shore Gas company, and was a "green event" I decided to search for some papers that were recycled products to fit with the theme. I chose this Banana Fiber paper to print the labels on,while adding the quick strokes of green leaves.

Coca-Cola Cupcakes

Recipe adapted from Baked: The New Frontier

Yields 15 cupcakes

Cupcakes:

2 cups Coca-cola (do not use diet!)
1 cup dark unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs

Whipped Cream Frosting:

1 1/2 cups of heavy whipping cream
4 tablespoons of powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Maraschino cherries (for topping)

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Generously spray the inside of the cupcake liners with nonstick cooking spray.

In a small saucepan, heat the Coca-cola, cocoa powder, and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted. Add the sugars and whisk until dissolved. Remove from the heat and let cool. In a large bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt together.
In a small bowl, whisk the eggs until just beaten, then whisk them into the cooled cocoa mixture until combined. Gently fold the flour mixture into the cocoa mixture. The batter will be slightly lumpy–do not overbeat, as it could cause the cake to be tough.
Pour the batter into the prepared cupcake liners/tin and bake for about 20 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through the baking time, until a small skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
In a medium bowl, beat whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract until medium peaks form.

Transfer to pastry bag with a 5B star tip. In a circular motion, pipe on whipped cream and top with one cherry.

THRIVE ColorME Cards

With a recent order in the studio, I began working on new designs for my ColorME Card line. Many you may know that we have a family that is near and dear to our hearts that have not one but both children diagnosed with a genetic disorder called Sanfilippo Syndrome MPSIII.

Often you may see my status on FB asking people to VOTE for this foundation to raise money for research. This design is a little more personal, we have pledged to help stand by the Boyce family in raising money to build a SAFE home for their children, Jayden (5) and Brooklyn (2). The Bee is for Brooklyn (Beeba) but also for the miracle of a Bumble Bee and it's ability to FLY (Everyone, except the bumblebee itself, knows that a bumblebee can't fly. Its body is too big for such small wings, the laws of aerodynamics prove that the bumble bee should be incapable of flight) Hmmm.... guess the Bumblebee was created by God and he said it can FLY! The theme for the campaign is "don't just survive Sanfilippo but THRIVE" . Two little hearts are counting on us...Jayden and Brooklyn! Let's do what we can-

These cards measure 5.5x8" and are mounted on a purple stock with a matching purple envelope. Crayons are included like all our other ColorME designs. Navy Blue

You don't have to have "something BLUE"...you can have everything BLUE! Move over purple! There's a new favourite in town and that favorite is... NAVY! That's right, designers have unleashed their looks for 2011 and the big hit this upcoming season for bridesmaid dresses is navy blue.

This rich, dark hue is chic and ultra modern giving brides a wonderful alternative to the very austere black or to the multitude of purple shades we've seen in seasons past. Plus, blue is a great colour for evening weddings throughout the year and for fall or winter events.

For 2011, one of the hottest wedding color trends is navy blue. And though you might think that navy is an odd choice, It can be quite stunning if done right. The key is to pick the right complementary colors.

Navy Blue & friends..

Certainly navy looks terrific with white or cream, but for your wedding, get a little more creative. Consider pairing navy with tangerine, turquoise yellow or lime for spring or summer weddings. For fall and winter affairs, navy with burnt orange, silver, or chocolate brown looks stunning.

Attendants

Being asked to be a member of the wedding party is an honor. As an attendant, whether you are a bridesmaid or groomsman, you have been chosen to be a loving, supportive witness to the couple's marriage.

Many questions may arise when you accept your role in the wedding party.

What if you can't afford the associated expenses?
Can you back out once you've agreed to be an attendant?
Must bridesmaids throw a shower?

Although attendants' duties will vary based on the size and style of the event, here is a brief overview of certain tasks common to most weddings.

Typical Responsibilities of Attendants

Pay for their wedding attire and accessories (excluding flowers).
Arrange and pay for their own transportation. (Wedding hosts should provide the accommodations.)
Be timely and communicative regarding travel arrangements and acquiring attire.
Understand the specific duties involved (see below).
Arrive at specified times for all wedding-related events.
Attend the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner; attend other pre-wedding events when feasible.
Give an individual wedding gift to the couple, or contribute to a group gift from all the attendants.
Assist the bride and groom whenever possible.
Be attentive to other guests at the wedding and reception.

Specific Duties

Maid or Matron of Honor :
Helps the bride select the bridesmaids' attire.
Organizes the bridesmaids' gift to the bride.
Makes sure bridesmaids have their attire.
Holds the groom's wedding ring and the bride's bouquet during the ceremony.
Witnesses the signing of the marriage certificate.
Stands in the receiving line, if there is one.
Helps the bride during the reception (gathering guests for the cake cutting, dancing, the bouquet toss).
Helps the bride change into her going-away clothes, and takes care of the bride's wedding dress and accessories after the reception.

Drives the bride and groom to the reception if there's no hired driver; has the car ready for the couple to leave after the reception and may drive them to their next destination.
Offers a toast to the bride and groom at the reception; dances with the bride, the mothers, the maid of honor, and other single female guests.
Gathers and takes care of the groom's wedding clothes (returning rental items on the next business day).

Groomsmen and Ushers:
Attend the bachelor party, if there is one.
Contribute to the ushers' gift to the groom.
Lay the aisle runner, if one is used, before the processional.
Greet guests and escort them to their seats.
Know the seating order; review special seating arrangements prior to the ceremony.
Hand each guest a program, if programs are provided.
Remove pew ribbons, close windows, re-roll the aisle runner, retrieve any programs or articles left behind after the ceremony.
Help guests who need directions to the reception site.
Be on hand to assist any guests who are infirm or disabled.
Dance with the bride, the mothers, the bridesmaids, and other single female guests.
Coordinate the return of rental clothing with the head usher or best man.

Today there are so many little details that get overlooked until the last minute. The big things are done...dress, venue, flowers, invites, photog, music- I find that I usually hear from my brides again at the end of the planning as well. Whether it be food labels, programs, or even RESERVED signs for the first few rows of seating or to mark the family tables at the reception. It is nice to have these items done by the same stationer so that they can be coordinating from the invite ideas.

When I work with caterers for the buffet line labels, I try to get a sample invite if I didn't do the invite suite. This way I can match the style and fonts that where used to achieve the overall theme. So make sure, brides... that you save one invite until the end for vendors, it helps match up linens for your caterers and all the last minute finishing touches.

Be prepared for an EMERGENCY...

Uninvited Guests:

It seems that many people today have forgotten that invitations are issued only to the people whose names are on the envelope. The Emily Post Institute has had a deluge of letters lately from dismayed hosts and hostesses who have had to cope with uninvited guests. In some cases it’s just a question of annoyance or social embarrassment; in others it’s a matter of considerable additional expense.

What’s the big deal, you ask?

Consider this. You are hosting your daughter’s wedding reception for 80 people at $75 per person for the catering. At the reception, you notice that your cousins Dick and Jane have brought their four children (under age 7); eight of the couple’s friends have brought dates and there are three people nobody seems to know. The caterer presents his bill for the 95 people who actually attended the event, busting your budget by $1,125.

Or imagine your child’s fourth birthday and one of the little guest’s mother calls to ask if she can bring along a sibling. You say, “Sorry, we were really just planning on four year olds and don’t have any activities for seven year old Johnny.” Imagine your dismay when you open the front door to Johnny and little Sara, and see Mom pulling away from the curb.

Sadly, nowadays when many people receive an invitation they assume that they can bring their husband/date/fiancé and, if they have children, each of them as well.

Here’s a little invitation 101...to TRY to avoid the akwardness-

Invitations are addressed only to those who are invited. If the invitation says “Ms. Mary Smith,” only Mary is invited. If the invitation says “Ms. Mary Smith and Guest,” then Mary may bring a guest of her choosing. When Mary replies to the invitation, she should say, “I am delighted to join you for dinner on the thirteenth. I will be bringing my good friend Jim Alcott.”

If children are invited, their names will be added below their parents’ names, or the invitation will be addressed to “Mr. and Mrs. Sam Jones and Family”. The Joneses would reply, “Sam and I, along with Maddie and Tom, will be delighted to join you.”

If Mr. and Mrs. Sam Jones receive an invitation addressed just to them, you can bet your bottom dollar that it is a grown-up event. If the Joneses can’t arrange a sitter, they should decline the invitation. That’s true whether it is a wedding invitation or a less formal invitation to a barbecue. Even if the invitation is issued by phone, do not assume your children are invited, and do not ask if you can bring them anyway.

Almost as rude as the people who show up with uninvited guests are those who try to bully the hosts into making exceptions. “Hi, Ginger I got your invitation. I want to let you know that I will be bringing the children to the wedding. After all, they are family and it would be rude not to include all the family at the wedding, right?” Wrong! Whether the hosts drew the line at “no children” or “no second cousins,” it is their decision and should never be questioned.

And finally, the last word is about RSVP – French for “Repondez s’il vous plait” or, in plain English, “Please reply”. These little letters are the not-so-secret code that you should call or write your host within a day or two of receiving an invitation to let him know if you can attend or not. All invitations have some sort of a reply mechanism – an enclosed card, a phone number, an email address or a mailing address. A prompt reply is a basic courtesy.

It was great to have all my kids home...plus 1. Like any picture taking session, we have to take quite a few to get a "good" one. Eventually we do, but I have to say that some of my favorites are the ones that MOST would throw out or delete. They definitely show the character and the love my kids have for each other- So the next time you take a family photo...cherish the "bad" ones...they speak way more than the "picture-perfect" ones.

With all the press about the Royal Wedding on Friday, I began to google their invitation...Every time I got this same image. Really...??? Like some readers have said..."its not even proper wording".

I guess there is a hype or excitment already and there is no need to give your guests a pre-glimpse to their day. They are letterpress and gilt-gold edging with Queen Elizabeth's golden insignia. Measuring 8"x6" in white cotton with a quantity of 1900, that's alot of stamps-

The luckiest of royal insiders will receive an invitation to the Queen's reception for 600, to be held at the church immediatly after the ceremony (hey, 1,300 of you: don't take it personal!), and another invitation from Prince Charles, who's hosting a dinner for 300 that night at Buckingham Palace. Prince William's office has no plans to offer glimpses of these two coveted invitations.

Word has it that Kate's sister is the wedding planner and bringing in disco balls for the evening party. Sounds like it has raised a bit of "fur" with the Palace people... too funny. Good thing the Queen is going to stay some place else that night.

As a stationer, I would love to see the other two invites but at least this one is NOT an Evite-

It was like Christmas yesterday...let me explain, I got a NEW sketchbook! No really it is an exciting time, my old one had about two pages left and I have some designs that need to be sketched.

While I was at the store I came across this booklet called Zentangle. Basically doodling made into ART! Funny because when I was in college I drew a pen and ink circle piece of artwork using these very same formulas...dang I could have been rich already.

The artist, Maria Thomas is one like myself that creates hand painted and calligraphy invitations, her husband a former monk, Rick (hence the Zen part...meditation) While she was drawing and doodling she began to express the carefree feelings of doing this. Classes have also migrated into the therapeutic and healing side of life. It is known fact, that what you draw and doodle... say when you are on the phone...actually means something! Are you a straight line or Curly Q? Me definitely Curly Q! ...even in my landscaping outside, nothing is straight, my husband always gives me a hard time, he is a Straight Line guy.

Here is a sample of the invites for Taylor and Jeremy in California. They are a spin off of the Save the Date cards we created for them back in December. Keeping in mind all the details that the bride wanted to let her guests know, we decided to go with a booklet style format and a pocket page in the back to house the Response Card. The wedding is a casual but dressy affair, backyard theme but still very elegant...whimsical I guess.

SAVE-THE-DATES.

Wedding stationery is a must for brides and grooms and it’s never been more important to have save-the-date cards. As soon as you set a wedding date, send all the people on your probable guest list a save-the-date card so they know to keep the date open on their calendars. After all, people are busy these days. If they know about your celebration ahead of time, they’re more likely not to plan any other activities for that date.

CREATE CREATIVE WEDDING PROGRAMS.

Wedding programs tell guests what to expect on the big day, but that doesn’t mean the programs have to be boring or predictable. Have a good time creating something to inform guests and be memorable at the same time. Some ideas? A program modeled after a social networking site like Facebook or Twitter or a program inspired by your favorite comic strip – use comic panels to tell guests what will happen throughout the event.

MODERN CHOICES.
The contemporary, modern wedding will still be big in 2011. Brides are opting for non-traditional dress choices, such as: beautiful hues instead of the usual white or ivory; old shoulder instead of strapless; and short cocktail dresses (the little white dress) instead of a long gown. Ryan to the RESCUE!

A few weeks back my daughter was involved with the shooting of a film here in Wadsworth, Blood on the Plain. Due to the lack of make up artists that were able to attend, she was faced with more duties than originally expected. One of the characters needed a tattoo, okay... she has done this before... but she also had a crew of over 30 to apply makeup to as well.

I helped her redesign the drawing, we spent countless hours trying to transfer the image onto her leg for practice....when I finally said "I am going to call Ryan". Late that night I FB messaged him to see if he could help us out with this. Ryan is a great stay at home daddy of 2 year old TRIPLETS, who also does tattoos after bedtime stories are over. Ryan came and saved the day! Oh did I forget to mention this is just a temporary tattoo? He brought his rubber gloves, transfer paper and sharpie markers. It turned out great! When he was done, Danielle was able to age it, and make it weathered and worn. Great team work guys!

80's Theme....

This week I have an event for Jay Swidler of ABJ Elite Party Staffing at 847-529-7943. They are putting together this awesome, far out 80's party for a client of theirs. Bringing in the Bar scene from the past- with a shot girl and a full no-no- notorious cocktail list.

80's theme....what do you remember from the 1980's. For some of you, like my kids they would say I wasn't quite born in time to remember anything. Others may say Ronald Reagan, cassette tapes, oh yeah and Pac Man or Flash Dance!

Aaah, the 80s - that happy little decade between social activism and self-loathing grunge. Back when the Coreys were king and Kirk Cameron hadn't been left behind. When Cabbage Patch Kids spawned Garbage Pail Kids, and we liked it. From the obscure to the obvious to the no-no-notorious.

For some, the 80’s were a great time. The creation of MTV revolutionized fashion, the music industry and even how we watched TV. For others, it was nothing but bad hair, worse clothing and music that often had more to do with machines than talent. We take the former approach and relish the excess and outrageous fashions that the 80s managed to make mainstream. We didn't accessorize - we "excessorized" and LOVED it.

The clothes worn in the 80s depicted people who were trying to find themselves. They looked for ways to express their creativity and individuality. Men wore heavy make up and grew long hair. Women wore short hair and layers of clothing. Both sexes were looking for an identity.

As far as fashion goes, no decade is quite as no-no-notorious as the 80s. After all, in what other decade could you get away with wearing skin-tight pants one day and baggy “MC Hammer” pants the next? During what other time period could you wear leg warmers, a sweater and a miniskirt all at the same time (and in electric neon colors)? Take a walk down memory lane and read just a few fashions to die for.

Shoulder pads may very well be the worst of the top 10 80s fashion fads. In fact, our online polls on this site indicate that you agree with that assessment, with an overwhelming majority of our site visitors rating shoulder pads as the worst of the fashions of the 1980s. Why on earth did we want to make our shoulders look bigger? I can’t quite remember. Maybe it had something to do with woman's lib and the assertion of power that women were beginning to have in the work place? Rank speculation. Whatever the reason, we wore shoulder pads often and we did so with pride. The second picture below is a beautiful example of shoulder pads in action. Between her totally bitchin' feathered hair and the awesome oversized jacket with shoulder pads to the heavens, this 80s babe had it going on.

Leg Warmers. Another of one of the top 10 80s fashion fads that didn’t make a lot of sense was that of leg warmers. Maybe we all had really cold legs because of the miniskirts we wore or maybe we just thought they looked cute. Whatever our reasoning was at the time, at least one or two pairs of leg warmers could be found in every girl’s dresser.
Huge Earrings. You know how cute Christmas ornaments look on a tree? During the 80s we thought the same would apply to our ears. Huge earrings from various costume jewelry collections were all the rage and if your earrings didn’t touch your shoulder, they weren’t big enough.

Parachute Pants. Oh yes… and then there were parachute pants. They started off skin tight and ended up baggier than a potato sack. Parachute pants may very well be the one piece of clothing that can sum up the ridiculousness of the 80s fashion fads.

Whether we were phoning home or defending the world against evil with GI Joe figurines, the pop culture of the 80s truly defined the era. Between the world's obsession with the Cold War and scandals like the Iran Contra Affair that rocked the globe, it's a wonder we had time for any fun at all.

Ironically, fun was what the 80s were all about. Not only did we rock out with our leggings and My Little Ponies, but the pop culture of the 80s brought us hours of fun-induced headaches with Rubik's Cube and competitive hair teasing. By the power of Greyskull, we HAD the power, and most of all, we wanted our MTV.

Many of you know that I have been designing color pages for a local restaurant. This week's blog posts began with "Kid Friendly Weddings" ...and having plenty for the little ones to do.

During one of my "creative cramps", as I like to call them... at 2:00 in the morning. I thought "hey I could make Custom Pages for weddings and mitzvahs"! Design them to match the invites and other themes used for the event. Have the word puzzles be about the Bride and Groom or the sayings and quotes come from the child who is moving into adulthood through a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. With the trends moving towards true personalization what a great way to interact with all the age groups.

WOW your guests, when they are presented with a coloring page from their child and a keepsake from your special day- It is all about going that one step further that makes your day set apart from the rest, and keeping the little ones busy.

Families are being relocated all over the states...so when it comes to a family wedding, you have to take into account that the whole family may be traveling to the wedding.
If you are planning on having children attend your wedding and reception a little pre-planning will go a long way and be much appreciated by your guests. Planning for this is important to do from the beginning. It will determine a "Kid Friendly" menu with the caterers and seating at your venue. Centerpiece ideas, entertainment and even songs a DJ can have on hand for the playlist. Here are some details...

1. Hire a professional entertainer such as a balloon artist, magician or even a makeup artist to do face painting or tattoos.
2. If you are seating the "little" guests at their own table, make sure you have a "Party Nanny" or babysitter. It is wise to have a teenager at each kiddie table to help with meals and activities.
3. When you meet with your caterer, keep in mind the little fingers and appetites. Try to plan some "Kid Friendly" foods and snacks for when they get to the reception. Adults can control their hunger better than the little ones. Also make sure you have cups with lids, so that everyone stays dry.
4. Activities, having plenty of things to do at their table will help pass the time and keep them occupied. Things like coloring pages and crayons, puzzles, playdough, beads, stickers are just a few ideas. If you decide to give each child their own goodie bag ...use it as their escort card, filling it with all sorts of fun items for their evening.
5. Teen Scene, remember that some teens may not mingle with the adult crowd, but are too "old and cool" for the kiddie table. Bring in some activities and games for them, ...have a fold up ping pong table or some board games? Set up a teen scene corner...although, you may find some of the adults wandering over to that section too. Twister, decks of cards, Baggo Game or even a dessert area ...with a Cupcake Bar for the "hands on" yummies.
6. Centerpieces can also be tailored to the "little" crowd, don't put some fancy florals on their table. Have your florist design a "Kid Friendly" piece to match the concept and colors of the rest of the reception flowers.
7. If the wedding is in the evening, remember that the "little ones" may need a place to nap. Set up an area, off to the side with some porta cribs and soft blankets. Even though the noise may be loud with people talking and music going...who hasn't heard the term "sleeping like a baby"?
8. DJ, Make sure you discuss with your musicians or DJ to have a few pieces dedicated to the younger crowd. Have the Bride and Groom play musical chairs with the kids...make sure they each get something when they get knocked out of the game, so it is a "win-win" situation. Hokey Pokey is always a classic, have a "Kids Only" dance or even invite all the "little" future brides to join in at the end of the father/daughter dance with their daddies.

Just keep some of these things in mind, ...view your event from the eyes of a child before hand and you will be surprised at the response you get from the parents as well as the "little ones".

As a stationer,... include a "Kid Friendly" card with your invitation suite. Explaining and letting the parents know you "have things covered", so they don't have to worry about anything and can enjoy your event!

Today we are going to the city to mingle with some vendor friends as well as hear the great news of Laura Wrasman from Wedding Guide Chicago. I had the pleasure of meeting her and sitting at the same table as Laura at the Wish Upon a Wedding Gala Ball back in November. What a great publication she has created and now the awesome news of partnering with Wish Upon a Wedding, naming them their 2011 charity of choice. All involved with this great organization are very thrilled to have yet another way to raise monies for this charity that grants weddings for terminally ill couples. We all sign up thinking we are going to do "good"..."give back"..and we do, BUT the blessings we get back is way more important than the services or items we donate. This I know "first-hand", it is almost a year ago that I was part of Beth and Nick's dream day, one that will live in me forever. Get rid of those suitcases...

Trying to stay up on all the changes from Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, and even Linked In can be a challenge these days...lol No wonder people hire companies to do this for them! Somehow when FB changed it's look and you were able to add your employment information, or for some of us our FB Local Business page, mine linked to the current CWdesigns page automatically. But for others, when you typed in the page title, you got a blank "SUITCASE" page...UGH!

Wait, what, I already have a Business page, now people need to like this one too....? But there was never any activity on that one- We had "likes" and "friends that liked" ...FB people we are trying to run our businesses, we don't have time to spend everyday figuring out the new and lasted changes. We are glad to have the technology, but we are not computer geniuses...ease up on us.

Side note: what is the reason to "use FB page as."...now?, I haven't gotten into that one yet- maybe next week.

When my daughter was trying to add hers, it wouldn't work. I began looking at most of my industry friends and noticing...yep "the SUITCASE", or I guess it's called a BRIEFCASE. I tried all sorts of things to get hers to work, driving her crazy most of the times, having her log in and out of FB. "Mom, it's okay I don't need to have it linked" ...

This past weekend, I brought it to my sister's attention...much like me, she is a google monster and loves to crack things like this. So after hours of trying different things, she deleted her current job and re-added it ....MAGIC it came up. So for all of you out there with a "SUITCASE" and a "LOCAL BUSINESS PAGE" delete the SUITCASE- Just make sure when you re-add, you are typing the page name EXACTLY- What we did was delete, log out, log back in...and then re-add.

I came across this book in my studio...My daughter bought it a few years ago... Colorstrology by Michele Bernhardt What your birthday color says about you...what Pantone color are you? Designing wedding invites and custom stationery the Pantone color guide is used from bridesmaid dresses, flowers to napkins and more for the reception. The metamorphosis of a BUTTERFLY

Lately the BIG question has been...Why am I doing what I am doing? I know this may seem strange, after all it is half way through February and I am still working on my GOALS for 2011 (or just in general...working on my goals) During this cold winter, we have been doing a lot of reading (sidenote: sometimes we have as many as 5 or 6 books per and our laptops going at the same time, I have turned my husband into a book junkie like myself and my daughter) So it has sparked this question for me. My husband has his 2011 GOAL, why don't I?

What is a goal? Dictionary.com says it is the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end. Hmmm...okay so what does that mean for me? I know lots of questions-

Today I found myself in a familiar part of the bible with my devotions. A Brand New ME... We live by faith, not by sight (2Cor.5:7) a new creation... a ministry of reconciliation. Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in the day to day and all the past baggage you have been through. Each day you awake with those troubles still weighing heavy, evaluating our worth by worldly measuring sticks. You TRY to think positive and most of us make a good attempt but struggle to do this at times.

In reading and referencing the video The Strangest Secret it has made me think and commit to the 30 day challenge of constantly thinking...BELIEVE and SUCCEED. Soooo that "goal thing" keeps coming up, if I am going to BELIEVE I need to know why I am doing what I am doing...lol ...in order to SUCCEED.

I began thinking of my verse 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come! This is what I have based the concept of my design process on. Custom invitations is a process, one that takes time and inspiration from God. Much like the metamorphosis of a BUTTERFLY. I have reflected where my business has been over the last 2+ years and relating it to the stages of a butterfly. So back to homeschool Science class...

First stage is the EGG: the stage that starts it all. Birth the "NEW LIFE" Relating it to my design business: the beginning with my decision to take that step in faith and begin CWdesigns. Or even in the day to day; the EGG is the CLIENT, the new concept that enters my door or drawing board. We spend little time here before we jump into the next two stages which are more of where it is at.

Second stage is the LARVA: that cute caterpillar, fuzzy and having no worries. It's main commandment is "to eat and grow" During this time he/she sheds it's old skin over and over again preparing for the end result. This is the time in my business that I still work on everyday..."networking" a time of growth...always trying to challenge myself to learn more, meet more amazing people and become a better person with God's help. Trying to learn all I need to so I can become a "SOCIAL BUTTERFLY" Even though I think I may never leave this stage..., I am confident my wings will flutter about one day. In the day to day design concept: it has taken the client and the new idea and begun to process with sketches and brain storming. Creating a concept that will tie the passion of my ARTWORK with the dreams and visions of my client. Sometimes we are eating and growing more hours and days than other clients....mostly because my creative side is being stubborn or preoccupied. This is a time I solve issues of how to create a new design, research a new flower to draw or another way to layout a 5x7 panel card! Did you know that just before the caterpillar begins to anchor itself in the silken hold, it hangs helpless in the shape of a "J"....now I think he is saying okay "Jesus", I have given it my all and it is in your hands now. You have breathed in me what you want me to share with this client, it is time to rest...

Third stage is the PUPA: the time of change also is "the resting stage" Since I started CWdesigns I have made many changes from business card redesigns, website changes (for this I say sorry to my sister, who handles that for me..lol) I have even changed the name of the company to Carol Woldhuis Designs. Making it very clear who I am with a definite concrete branding. Establishing a unique distinctive mark and being proud of it! But in life we all have to do this to become the people we are called to be. No one is born or created a finish product...we are all a work in progress. Not finished until we are called "home". The resting part for me is the time I let an idea set on my palette before I release it to a client, or even the time a client is looking over the designs I have created for them....sometimes this is a restful stage, I have to be honest. A time of second guessing and deliberating over what I could have done differently. But I get over it quick when I get the response email or phone call from the client. Learning to "BE STILL" has been my new motto, take one day at a time and everything will work out for the best. My facebook status says All you need is a PURPOSE and FAITH and everything else will fall into place. Again part of my 30 day commitment, thinking only positive thoughts....it sounds so easy but another FUN FACT...it is harder to think positive thoughts than it is to think negative ones. Try it, make a 30 day commitment yourself!

The last and Fouth stage is ....drum roll please....BUTTERFLY!!! A beautiful creation, rebirth, free spirited and unique in it's own way. Like humans, they are blessed with different color and features. How life would be so boring if we were all the same, God must have thought the same when he created butterflies. Even a Monarch butterfly has different places on its wings where the colors are distributed compared to it's parents.
For my company I hope that my rebirth is about what God's will is for Carol Woldhuis Designs. Using it as a ministry of reconciliation. Letting people know that we can experience this same rebirth if we BELIEVE, and in turn we will SUCCEED. Remember succeeding doesn't always have to be in the color of "GREEN", again don't let the world be your measuring stick. Like a butterfly with vibrant colors, be that BRIGHT light for all to see and you will fly far.

So a few of my goals for 2011 are:

BE STILL...know that God is in control and it is HIS timing.

Work to RELAX....being able to have time and money to enjoy life
and the people that are most important to me.

Sip the BEAUTY of life...become aware of creation

Be CONTENT....be proud of my talents and designs

One says "you can chase a BUTTERFLY all over the field and never catch it. But if you SIT quietly in the grass, it will COME and sit on your shoulder."

I have to chuckle sometimes when I refer to some of my industry FB/Twitter friends as "FRIENDS"....Technology today has allowed us to meet people and see into their day to day lives without really knowing them. To some that may be scary, but 3 years ago when I decided to enter into the Bridal Market with my pencils and paint brushes I have met some very fun loving people. Sometimes the conversation at a vendor networking event might start out like..."Hi I am _________ we are Facebook Friends"...lol or "I saw your tweet on that!" Or you recognize someone from their 1"x1" profile photo...Crazy I know but these people truly become your friends, like Desiree. Now its all hugs when we meet up :) - My daughter came with me to a Chicago Style Wedding magazine launch recently, when we saw Desiree again she began to ask Danielle all about her time in North Hollywood and her makeup school. We laughed and said "facebook tells all"-

But what I hear over and over again in trying to break into a new market is

"it's NOT who you know anymore,

it's who knows YOU".

TOUGH LOVE

These past few weekends I have been helping my daughter Danielle Ruggiero HairStylist and MakeUp Artist build her portfolio. Since she has been home from California, she has been busy at work planning different shoots. Here is an example of what went on this past weekend in her "Valentine/Tough Love" shoot. The girls have been great and even my two sons got in on the action- Of course the boys are waiting for the next shoot on her books...which is the blood, gore and the zombies shoot. She is a licensed HAIR STYLIST and a MAKE UP ARTIST, with over 6+ years of experience. Recently adding to her makeup bag the skills and techniques of Special Effects and Character makeup, while studying in North HOLLYWOOD at MUD under many respectable industry professionals. She is currently working freelance, looking forward to working on a few films coming this Spring, where she can utilize her FX skills ...as well as Bridal Season....lol Maybe someone would like to look like the Bride of Frankenstein so she can use all her skills and talents at one time!

Although I draw a variety of things for our custom stationery, pancakes and eggs were not one of them. I have to say it went pretty well and I am hoping this may be a long term relationship with this client.

Do I MAKE Paper Flowers...?

This Sunday is the 20th ORT Chicago Party Planning Showcase at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort from 10:30-3:30. I am teaming up with Catering by Chef Paul (and Ginger) and collaborating on some of their awesome food items. Creating tags and designing their food labels-

It is the LARGEST showcase in the Chicagoland area. There will be vendors of all sorts, showing off their greatest for MITZVAHS and WEDDINGS. So if you know anyone in that market send them on over...it's FREE! Plan your whole event in a day...well get some contacts anyways-

At their booth they will have some FUN never seen before ideas that we are soooo excited about, but I can't share them until after the show.

One thing I can show you is my oober fantastic Paper Floral arrangement. We decided that the arrangement would look awesome made from paper,....have I done this before? Well... nope but my past floral design experience kicked in and I went to town crafting flowers. The vase is about 3 feet tall so the overall arrangement is about 5 or 6 feet tall....not sure how we are going to get it there but it turned out pretty good- I think it will definitely make a statement for them and their booth.

I will be walking the aisles and checking out the show myself, so stop by and say HI if you are in the area.

I can IMAGINE, ACHIEVE, DREAM and BECOME!

Today in my devotional journey with The Creative Call, it struck me about the people along the way that have been encouragers and discouragers. The author introduced an ARTIST, her name being MARY... and how she was a young age when her mother created a design studio out of a linen closet. Although many people along her path "discouraged" her, she still followed her dreams and it turns out this MARY the author talks about is
MARY ENGLEBREIT!

Recently I have been having this personal struggle with some reactions I have when people ask what I do and their response is..."you make cards.." Even my husband will say to others she makes "cards"...really nice ones, high end...haha at least he does throw in they are of great value. I have been working on him to say "she designs CUSTOM EVENT STATIONERY" and he is doing a good job with that! But I have to get over that, it's not what people think. I know my passion and calling is to use my ARTISTIC talents to impact others. I just have to keep reminding myself every now and again...haha ...BUT don't we all?

When I look back on my design blueprint....I can see where sometimes the train has derailed. I can also see some of the friends of my older children, that have ARTISTIC abilities but most likely don't have the support that are not pursuing their talents. Convincing themselves that they can't make any money in the field of ART. I try with my own kids to let them know whatever they decide to be, make sure it is something you love and have a passion for. A feeling of being "called" to do it. How do you know what that is...? I tell them if your passion is so strong you will know and it will make you excited to talk about it to others...and the money will follow- Doing something in the ART field may be a bit harder to make a "living" but your passion will drive you to succeed that much more. A "living" is different in the eye of the beholder.

People contributor Paula Chin described the artist's trademark style as "a cute and cluttered version of American homeyness"; Engelbreit's many greeting cards, mugs, posters, textiles, clothing, wallpapers, and other decorative creations feature "round-faced, impish kids, benign animals, flowered and checkered borders," according to Chin. Appraising Mary Engelbreit: The Art and the Artist, which profiles the artist's career and philosophy, a Publishers Weekly contributor described Engelbreit's art as "whimsical, nostalgic, and often veering to the cute or sentimental," yet also reflecting the artist's "celebration of love, faith, decency and the vicissitudes of everyday life."

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1952, Engelbreit demonstrated enough enthusiasm and talent for drawing that her parents allowed her the use of an empty linen closet as a "studio" when she was age eleven. In addition to art, she exhibited an early talent for commerce, and with the encouragement of friends, was selling her original artwork while still in high school. Rather than go to college, she found a job at a St. Louis art-supply store, then moved to a local advertising agency. Meanwhile, in 1977 she married Phil Delano, with whom she would have two sons. Hoping to work from her own imagination, she took a portfolio of her works to New York City, but found that her dream of illustrating children's books was not a possibility. Undaunted by her rejections from book publishers, Engelbreit decided to pursue greeting-card sales, and by the mid-1980s was successfully licensing several of her designs. "I have always appreciated the little things that happen every day: laughing with friends, a hug, a beautiful sunset," she explained to Hopscotch interviewer Patricia Nikolina Clark. "From the time I was little, I collected those little moments in my head. That's what I illustrate … [on my cards]—those little moments."

Encouraged by her husband, Engelbreit decided to follow her dream to establish her own company. From its base of operations in the couple's basement, in 1983 the Mary Engelbreit Greeting Card Company marketed twelve of Engelbreit's designs at the annual National Stationery Show in New York City. On the back of each of her cards, she printed "This illustration is by Mary Engelbreit, who thanks you from the bottom of her heart for buying this card," a sentiment that has become something of a trademark. Within two years the company was producing a hundred designs and was licensing art for use in cards, calendars, and other objects. Delano left his job as a social worker to become Engelbreit's business manager, and the business prospered further as a result.

The Creative Call

Browsing the shelves at the bookstore today I came across a book called The Creative Call by Janice Elsheimer. Being an artist it caught my eye, plus it is also written from a Christian perspective. I just started it and can see I am going to love this journey of reading and evaluating my life as an artist.

I remember years ago thinking that anyone can create, and that what I do is ...NOT so special. I have a dear friend who would always tell me that God has given me this talent to share with the others and the world. I totally agree but still, it was ME...the NOT so special person. In this book she states that some people equate certain talents, especially the arts, with laziness and foolishness. Wondering when people like me will get a "real job". I have to admit, you begin to feel inadequate and second guess what you do.

This past year, I have spent a lot of time networking and promoting my design business. It has been a journey for me to get myself out of the "crafter" box and into the "artist" category for several reasons. Some because of my own issues and others because of what people think and say- So when I saw this book, I was excited to start reading it! People are "called" to different focuses and careers in life, what might be right for one is not right for another. Knowing who you are is so important in finding yourself and living your dream. I think I am finally getting there...lol

So follow along as I continue on this journey of reevaluating and validating my life as an ARTIST.

I believe my talents are a gift from God, and I am to use them to fulfill His purpose in my life and in his world. Postcards...another option

Everyone is still trying to cut corners and save some pennies...Postcards are becoming more popular for Save the Dates, Response Cards and even some more informal Invitations. The postage on them is less than an envelope and the cost per piece is usually less without the envelope and additional papers. One draw back though that I have found is...postcards sometimes get stuck in the bulk junk mail and get missed by the recepient. So you may have more missed mail this way, just something to consider if you go this route.

How fun though to send out "destination wedding" response cards with a Vintage or Destination location on the front. Create the excitement for travel plans ahead of time!

Some trends for 2011

The last year brought the entire wedding industry to greater heights amidst the financial crisis everyone particularly felt. As the world ushers in 2011, weddings will still continue to be more and more glamorous throughout the seasons.

The biggest trend of making weddings more personal and more meaningful did bring in the fad of DIYs or Do It Yourself projects for the bride-to-be. The couples were able to put their personal stamp onto each and every detail involved in the entire process.

For other trends in the wedding industry for the upcoming year, here is what remains in store for the brides of 2011.

Ruffle everything up with texture. Be it from the flowers to the table settings, the design is basically about textures. Layered fabrics in monochromatic color scheme can create a visually stimulating scene at the dinner or at the church. Blooms need not to be too costly, locally bought wild flowers of the season can still do the trick without breaking the bank.

The best seats for the best show. The outdoors give a different meaning to what an intimate wedding is all about. The officiating minister or priest along with the couple could be placed at the middle of surrounding seats, with the guests lounged in bean bags and picnic cloths. As the venue expands, the guests also get to have a better view and a special participation in the I do's.

It's all about the dinner. As both families gather to celebrate the special day, the dinner becomes the main feast as everyone digs in to have a great time. Emphasis is given to the sit-down meal through closely knit tables and warm home-cooked dishes served family style. Most of the time spent during the reception actually falls into the guests eating their hearts out while enjoying the company of the newlyweds.

Refreshing sights with tea-length dresses. The bride does not necessarily have to choose long trails of white dresses for the wedding day. Tea-length dresses are in fashion most especially for outdoor weddings all year round. At the least, it gives the future brides more options when having their perfect wedding gown made.

A family between two families. As another new family blossoms after the wedding, a great way of paying homage to the bride and groom's roots would be through their own wedding day. Simple details that tie up to the family tree gives a sense of meaning and sentiment into each element. Framed photos of both parents could be displayed at the reception venue and family-recipes of chosen desserts could also be featured.

Bright red lips all day long. Pucker up and show off those beautiful lips even when hidden underneath the veil. Dramatic and oh-so-luscious, the bright red lipstick totally pops out amongst the glistening white dress and headpiece from the bride's ensemble. No need for over-the-top glitters, shimmers and even humongous earrings - the trend of the red lips are here to stay.

End the party with a bang. Grand exits were big for 2010, hence it will still be until the next year. More and more couples dream of bigger, better and more dramatic exits that suit the theme of their wedding. Helicopter rides, horse-drawn carriage, the Zamboni - any ride, trick or performance would certainly be fairytale-like to cap off the couple's "happily ever after".

Prenuptial shoots with an attitude. It has come more than just simple portraits of the engaged couple to be used for the announcements; the shoot has turned into a unique photo session that is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The location, the theme and even the poses have all evolved to accommodate the couple's own identity and personality. Looks like more creative shoots and inventive styles will be expected out of next year's newly weds.

Vintage, retro and timeless classics. The theme of the past becomes more and more interesting as it is recreated in the present time. Although a few couples have grown tired of seeing the same concept over and over again, each wedding holds its own personal touch which sets it apart from millions. The homey feel of the chic decors coupled with vintage pieces passed on from older generations certainly perfects the exact meaning of a wedding celebration.

Whoopie pies are considered a New England phenomenon and a Pennsylvania Amish tradition. Whoopie Pies have also been known as a "gobs." in Western Pennsylvania (see Gob History below).
They are one of Maine's best known and most loved comfort foods. Mainers will even claim that they were weaned on whoopie pies. In Maine, these treats are more like a cake than a pie or a cookie, as they are very generously sized (about hamburger size). they're so hug that you'll want to share one with a friend. A big glass of milk is almost mandatory when eating a whoopie pie.
A whoopie pie is like a sandwich, but made with two soft cookies with a fluffy white filling. Traditional whoopies pies are made with vegetable shortening, not butter. The original and most commonly made whoopie pie is chocolate. but cooks like to experiment, and today pumpkin whoopie pies are a favorite seasonal variation.

The recipe for whoopie pies has its origins with the Amish, and in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, it is not uncommon to find roadside farm stands offering these desserts. Amish cooking is about old recipes that have fed families for generations, with no trendy or cross-cultural fusions or mixtures. These cake-like whoopie pies were considered a special treat because they were originally made from leftover batter. According to Amish legend, when children would find these treats in their lunch bags, they would shout "Whoopie!"
Main's earliest claim is from the Labadie's Bakery in Lewiston, Massachusetts. They first started selling Whoopie Pies in 1925 with the opening of their bakery. The Labadie's Bakery remains in the same location today.
The Berwick Cake Company of Roxbury, Massachusetts, also manufactured “Whoopee pies” since at least 1931. Some think that Berwick’s pies actually date to 1927. Berwick closed its Roxbury plant in 1977.
The question of how the Amish dessert got to be so popular in New England probably is addressed in a 1930s cookbook called Yummy Book by the Durkee Mower Company, the manufacturer of Marshmallow Fluff. In this New England cookbook, a recipe for Amish Whoopie Pie was featured using Marshmallow Fluff in the filling.

According to the Marshmallow Fluff website:

The origins of Marshmallow Fluff actually go back to 1917. Before WWI, a Sommerville MA man named Archibald Query had been making it in his kitchen and selling it door to door, but wartime shortages had forced him to close down. By the time the war was over, Mr Query had other work and was uninterested in restarting his business, but he was willing to sell the formula. Durkee and Mower pooled their saving and bought it for five hundred dollars. Having just returned from France, they punningly renamed their product "Toot Sweet Marshmallow Fluff" but "Toot Sweet" didn't stay on the label for long. The situation of "no customers, but plenty of prospects" didn't last long either.
An early receipt still in the company's scrap books records the sale in April, 1920 of three one-gallon cans to a vacation lodge in New Hampshire. The price at the time was $1.00 a gallon! The door to door trade gained a reputation among local housewives that eventually placed Fluff onto local grocers shelves. Retail trade spread from there to the point where in 1927 they were advertising prominently in Boston newspapers.
Durkee-Mower became a pioneer in radio advertising when in 1930 they began to sponsor the weekly "Flufferettes" radio show on the Yankee radio network, which included twenty-one stations broadcasting to all of New England. The fifteen minute show, aired on Sunday evenings just before Jack Benny, included live music and comedy skits, and served as a steppingstone to national recognition for a number of talented performers. The show continued through the late forties.
Each episode ended with a narrator reporting that Boswell had disappeared to continue work on his mysterious book, which was assumed to be a historical text of monumental importance. On the last episode the Book-of-the-Moment was revealed. It was a collection of recipes for cakes, pies, candies, frostings and other confections that could be made with Marshmallow Fluff, appropriately entitled the Yummy Book. The book has been updated many times since then, and the most recent version is thirty-two pages long.

Gob History:
It seems that only in western Pennsylvania, mainly the Johnstown area, they are know as "gobs." The bakers at the now closed Harris & Boyar Bakery in Morrellville, PA, claimed to have invented the treat sometime in the 1920s. Probably they adapted what was already a regional favorite inspired by the cream-filled whoopie pies of Pennsylvania Dutch country, in the eastern part of the state.
According to an article in the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat newspaper, Johnstown’s Gob - A mealtime tradition, March 12, 2009:
Susan Kalcik, a folklorist and archivist with the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission in Johnstown, said her research shows that the Gob’s origin can be traced back to medieval Germany. "They were making a cake-like pastry with a filling. It probably was brought to America by various German groups like the Amish or German Brethren."
But Kalcik said the Gob is not a Johnstown invention. The Amish in Lancaster make them and she’s seen them as far south as Virginia. "They don’t call them Gobs, they’re called Whoopee Pies, " she said. "I’ve also found Whoopee Pies in New England and as far away as Hawaii."
Kalcik believes that the Gob became popular because it was easy to carry in a lunch bucket. "Men went into the coal mines or steel mills and the little cake with the icing on the inside instead of on the outside served their purpose," she said. "I’m convinced that the name Gob is related to the coal mines. Lumps of coal refuse were called gob piles. These working people adapted the name to the dessert."
But technically, not just anyone can use the name "Gob" for the familiar icing filled treats. The name-along with all the rights to market "Gobs"- belongs to Tim Cost, owner of Dutch Maid Bakery. Cost, who bought the rights from Harris & Boyar Bakery in Morrellville, said he’s always had a passion for the cake.

Christmas 2010

This year was a little different around our home. We didn't get our tree until the 22nd of December, it was the first free day for all of us to be in the same area/state. The weekend of the 18th, I spent in California moving my daughter home. I am glad to say a week later that all the suitcases, boxes and flat rates arrived unharmed. Now begins the unpacking...ugh! She will begin in January to build her portfolio to a new level, including her work with Special Effects and Character makeup. As the kids get older it is fun to see them when they all get together, how they interact as adult children....sometimes they act like they are young children again, playing a wrestling in the snow but it is all in good fun-
This year my middle son will be heading to Oaxaca, Mexico for his winter break on a school sponsored mission trip, when he returns he will begin to focus on his Nursing degree. So we won't have much time to see him this break but look forward to his safe return home on January 9th.

The son in the middle, believe it or not is the youngest of all three. We are not sure what he ate when he was younger...maybe all the pasta! His break will be spent I am sure sleeping from one friend's house to another.

When we were taking some of these wintery pictures, they decided to do some action shots...my youngest had my husbands slippers on so they kept falling off...yep he is barefoot in the snow-

and lastly a picture of my daughter's puppy who has not missed a tree cutting party yet! This year though he was decked out in his holiday sweater to keep him all warm and cozy.

As most of you know that read my blog, I LOVE Etsy! I decided to see what the "other side" is like and sign up to sell. Mostly looking at it as a test marketing project for some of my new designs. After having breakfast with a well respected industry professional last week and hearing her suggestions, I decided to follow through and design the "will you be my..." series. I promised her if I become a billionaire I will give her a cut...lol

These cards have become popular among brides, a more fun and formal way to ask their attendants to be part of their special day. I have created several different designs to be used for Maid/Matron..Bridesmaid..Jr Bridesmaid and Flower girl. They are hand painted to match the brides color scheme. The color gods from Pantone have spoken and just announced on December 9, 2010 that the color of the year for all things in the fashion and home industry will be "Honeysuckle." The Pantone Color Institute, which is the largest influence in selecting color trends for fashion, just released a statement advising that "honeysuckle" has been chosen for next year's go-to color.

It comes as no surprise to those in the fashion industry that this color would be the 2011 color of the year. This reddish-pink shade trickled all throughout New York's Fashion Week for designer's Spring 2011 collections and most notably made sporadic appearances in Badgley Mischka's Spring 2011 collection.

Pantone's executive director, Leatrice Eiseman, explains that the honeysuckle color was chosen to denote energy and the essence of hope. The vibrance of this color is to not just affect the wearer of the honeysuckle color, but to the public as a whole. High-fashion designer, James Mischka for the Badgley Mishcka line also adds that the reddish-pink shade can fashionably be worn all year long, however it does not pair well with black.

"In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues." Eiseman went on to say "Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum.

The intensity of this festive reddish pink allures and engages. In fact, this color, not the sweet fragrance of the flower blossoms for which it was named, is what attracts hummingbirds to nectar. Honeysuckle may also bring a wave of nostalgia for its associated delicious scent reminiscent of the carefree days of spring and summer."

Be ready for 2011 by incorporating honeysuckle accessories, scarves and blouses into your wardrobe. Even after 2011 passes, this color is excellent for spring and summer when paired with white.

Conversation pit created out of hundreds of small pillows stacked like sandbags in Amsterdam, so having five or six on the couch is nothing compared to this! Sure looks like a nice spot to take a nap. I am afraid at my house it would always be in a pile though..who can stack them the highest...or who can beat who the hardest...hahaha. Yeah probably not a good idea, better stick to the five or six that are always on the floor anyways.

Industrial meets Shabby Chic Artsy Girl

My husband's metal fabrication shop is moving into a different direction. So the storefront is being redesigned to house both Weber Metals and Carol Woldhuis Designs....already paying rent, why take on two!
The space will be set up separately but we are trying to blend the industrial with the shabby chic artsy girl- Hence my inspiration board above. I have had this little torn out picture for years of a painted metal treatment which I plan to do on the studio wall.
(Can't wait!) We are very excited and I am hoping to be back in the studio space by the end of January. So stay tuned for the launching photos and Open House alerts.

Italian Mini Panettone

Here's one for you Dad! Sounds good but not sure I would attempt to make this for 150 guests at a wedding reception...

...and there's that bakery twine again, LOVE IT!

Ingredients

Makes 1 dozen
1/3 cup warm water (about 110 degrees)
2 envelopes active dry yeast (each 1 scant tablespoon)
4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1/2 cup warm milk (about 110 degrees)
2/3 cup sugar
4 large whole eggs
3 large egg yolks
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 sticks cold unsalted butter, plus more for bowl and plastic wrap
2 cups mixed dried fruit, such as currants, cranberries, cherries, and apricots
Freshly grated zest of 1 lemon
Freshly grated zest of 1 orange
12 paper panettone molds
1 tablespoon heavy cream

Directions
Pour warm water into a bowl, and sprinkle with 1 envelope of yeast. Stir with a fork until yeast has dissolved, then let stand until foamy, 5 to 10 minutes. Stir in 1/2 cup flour, and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let stand in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 30 minutes.

Pour warm milk into a bowl, and sprinkle with remaining envelope of yeast. Stir with a fork until yeast has dissolved, then let stand until foamy, 5 to 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk together sugar, whole eggs, 2 egg yolks, salt, and vanilla. Whisk in milk mixture.

Beat butter and remaining 3 1/2 cups flour with a mixer on medium speed until mixture is crumbly. Reduce speed to low, and gradually add egg mixture. Raise speed to medium, and beat until smooth.

Add yeast-and-flour mixture, and beat on high speed until dough is elastic and long strands form when it's stretched, about 5 minutes. (It will still be very sticky.) Stir in dried fruits and zests. Transfer to a buttered bowl, and cover with buttered plastic wrap. Let dough stand in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 400 degress, with rack in lower third. Turn dough out onto a floured surface, and divide into 4-ounce portions. Knead a few times, then shape into balls. Drop each ball into a paper mold, transfer to a rimmed baking sheet, and loosely cover with buttered plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place until dough reaches edge of mold, 30 to 45 minutes.

Whisk remaining yolk with cream, and brush onto tops of balls. Cut an X in the top of each ball with kitchen shears.

Bake 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees, and bake until tops are golden brown and rise slightly above rims of molds, about 15 minutes. Tent baking sheet with foil if tops are beginning to get too brown. Transfer panettone to a wire rack to cool. Panettone can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Most of us give a lot of thought to our party decorations and food. We hope everyone will have a good time and we give consideration to music and maybe even games, depending on the party. Over the years I have been know to have some OCD when it comes to my "Martha-ness" (at least that is what I have been told). I love to entertain and cook, sometimes it gets out of hand with all the "details". But that is why you all love me...right? I was just searching around and came across this site Think Garnish- One of my loves of Chinese takeout is not the food, it is the reusable plastic deli containers. I have to admit when I open the refrigerator and see them all lined up after a meal or in preparation for a meal..it makes me smile- I know that sounds strange, even as I type this, I am thinking... wow..."I have a real problem" lol. Sometimes in the summer when the kids are home or if I go out of town for a bit, I fill several with Tuna, Chicken Salad, homemade Honey Roasted Peanut Butter and leave them for the family or my hubby. It gets really OCDish when I get the label maker out, but I have been know to do that too- So if you have this same sickness like myself you don't have to wait to spend $60 on Chinese food...these are so CHEAP! I may just have to order some, and the best part of all...my kids will be thankful...is I don't have to go and talk to the Chinese guy to see if I can buy some more containers, like I was planning to do. They also are great to take meals to others and not have to worry about getting back your container.

Cookie Memories

Growing up, I would visit my aunt and uncle in Garden City, New York. I remember making Rugala cookies with her often. I came across this nut chopper and it brought back memories of one she had that was very similar. Today I have a nut chopper, but much more high tech and similar to that "Slap Chopper" on the infomercials. Sometimes it is hard to imagine what my grandkids will use in their kitchens...some kind of Jetson nut chopper I suppose.

Rugala

Serving Size : 36
Categories : Cookies Jewish
-----FILLING-----
1 cup Ground pecans
1 cup Currants
1/2 cup Sugar
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
-----DOUGH-----
8 ounces Cream cheese -- room temperatu
2 cups All purpose flour
1 cup Butter -- room temp.
2 tablespoons Sugar
Flour
12 ounces Apricot jam -- jar
For filling: Combine pecans, currants, sugar and cinnamon in mixing
bowl.
For dough: Combine cream cheese, flour, butter and sugar in processor
or mixer and blend well. Divide dough into 4 pieces. Dust each with
flour, shaking off excess. Roll each piece between sheets of waxed paper
into 10″ circle. Refrigerate 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 375. Grease baking sheets. Spread each circle of dough
with apricot jam. Divide filling among circles, spreading evenly. Cut
each into 12 wedges. Roll up each wedge from bottom to point.
Arrange on prepared sheets, point side down. Bake until golden, about
16-17 minutes.
Transfer to wire rack and let cool. Store cookies in airtight container.
Tips: Be sure to work on just one circle at a time and keep others
refrigerated. Don't overdo the jam and cinnamon/pecan filling because
they tend to overflow and will burn quickly on your baking sheets.
Remove at once from the baking sheet to cool on racks when they turn
golden brown on top. After rolling out between waxed paper, one hour of
cooling is perfect to cut out, but they may be made ahead and
refrigerated longer. Just leave them out a bit before cutting out so
dough won't be so stiff to handle properly and roll well.

Growing up, and even after I married I continued the tradition of putting out Luminaries on Christmas Eve. What a beautiful idea to have at a wedding when your guest come to the reception. With the winter months getting darker and darker...earlier and earlier, you can light the way to your venue. Check out this site on...of course... With a date set, the venue secured...what will Kate's stationery look like? Will it be ordered from a Custom Couture company like CWdesigns or will her mother, Carole Middleton have a hand in it with their business Party Pieces? Visions of royal silks and pearls might be in order...possible a sapphire silk floret to enhance the boxed invite...hmmm what an order that would be to get inhouse here at Carol Woldhuis designs-
There is always a buzz when a big royal wedding is on the horizon...who will coordinate it? I know many here in the Chicago area that would be great for that job! She could call me and I would give her great references. Her gown...Deborah Joseph, editor of Brides , suggests Kate might opt "for one of Diana's favourite designers such as Bruce Oldfield or Amanda Wakeley, "out of respect for William". Another strong tip is the Brazilian designer, Daniella "Issa" Helayel, who set up her label in London in 2001, and who has been designing dresses for the bride-to-be for the past five years. It was a one-of-a-kind Issa dress and jacket that Kate wore when she and Prince William attended the wedding of his friend, Harry Meade, a few weeks ago.(BY Hilary Alexander 17 November 2010)

Thanksgiving...thankfulness

Holidays can be a bit sad sometimes for me...I miss the days when all the family lived close and the kids all got to see their cousins but life is in a different season now and most of the family lives in California.

Today as I think about this weekend, I do get excited! I began to prepare my menu for Saturday...yes Thanksgiving is Saturday here this year (Saturday benefits...we fill the empty chairs with good friends who have become our family at the holidays-) What to cook... what to clean..? Better get to the store soon. This year my daughter has been in California continuing her education in Make-Up and Special Effects. Although I have been out to Cali a few times, it is still not the same to have her here at home. Likewise goes for my middle son, who is at college in the city...as close as he is, we see him about the same. How different life becomes when your children become "adults"...

When I began to plan the weekend menu I thought of each one of my kids...mashed potatoes and stuffing for my middle son, some kind of pasta on Sunday for my daughter...and cannolis for my youngest (well those last two would go for either of my "bookends"). Oh did I forget to mention I still have one at home...that is because "he's never home". We sometimes joke about this "boarder" we call Nick. He is the most social 16 year old child I know, if there is not 8 guys here at one time, they are at someone elses house eating their food. But I love them all!
When I think about one thing that I am "thankful" for...it is my children. I am so pleased at the men and woman they have become, their strengths and weaknesses. I am glad that we will all be together this weekend to spend "family time". As I type this I am thinking of soooo many things that I am thankful for and am overwhelmed with how good God is to me and my family. It may be cold outside, but it is sure warm and fuzzy inside our home-

When a wedding is small you can go BIG!

That is exactly what Linda, Aaron's mom did.
The wedding took place at The American Club in Kohler Wisconsin this past weekend. It was an intimate family party of only 12. I had the honor to create the entire suite from silk boxes to fancy double mint truffle boxes that were displayed on the tablesetting for the honored guests. The Menu Cards were created to fit into the cover of the silk invite box after the reception, for a true keepsake.

The silk boxes were a cream color with black satin lining and crowned with a champagne silk floret and an exquisite rhinestone jewel! We added the green enamel hat pins to create a foilage effect. Each box was wrapped in a lace banding that were hand delivered by the couple. Now... THAT is an invitation! I always say that wedding stationery is so important. It sets the mood and shows your guests what to expect for your special day. Also how much you appreciate them and look forward to sharing your day with them.

Fun Shots and Words from Redwall Photography

Krystle and Eric are adorable. When you’re around them, you can’t help but unconsciously smile. I had such a blast the entire day I was shooting… not only was I super excited for them, but their wedding was the perfect mix of intimate, fun, romantic, party, and stylish. And, I even got to play a bit with the adorable canine members of the family (Penny and Jack) while Krystle was getting ready. A sure way to my heart is to have a fluffy puppy or two around.

But what do I think was the most memorable part of the day? It’s a tie. I loved that Krystle was so emotional during the vows that her sister/maid of honor had to step in and finish reading them, which was hysterical/adorable/perfect all at the same time. I also loved being able to document Krystle, Eric, the wedding party, and other family members decorating the venue, Byron Colby Barn, in the morning. It was a beautiful space, and it was sweet to see everyone chipping in to make everything perfect.
I’m so so so so happy for these two, and am so lucky that I was able to document their wedding!

Krystle and Eric

It is so nice to see the end result of our work. Most of the time when I create something for a client or vendor it leaves my studio and that may be the last I see of it.
Tasha Schalk of Redwall Photography sent me the digital files of her shots at Krystle and Eric's wedding. I worked closely with the caterer on this project. Ginger of Fresh Appetizers by Chef Paul created these beautiful cupcakes for the reception.

When I look at wedding photography these days it makes me want to do it all again...the creativity that a lot of photographers have these days is amazing!
